Terrorism And The Failure Of The U.K. Justice System

Abdul Rahman became the first person in Britain to be convicted of a
charge of disseminating terrorist information

From Times Online:

UP to 30 “high-risk” terrorists — including some of the most dangerous men in Britain — are due to be released from jail in the next year.

More are being freed in the wake of a ruling by Britain’s most senior judges that long sentences for terrorist crimes could “inflame” rather than deter extremism.

An analysis of appeal court cases shows that of the 26 terrorism cases it has heard, 25 have led to men with terrorism convictions having their sentences reduced.

My Comment: The sentence in this story that caught my eye was the following transcript from the judges ruling ....

If sentences were imposed which were more severe than the circumstances of the particular case warranted, that would be likely to inflame rather than deter extremism.

So .... as far as these judges are concerned, being harsh to terrorists and punishing them according to the law can be perceived as a means to inflame terrorism rather than deterring it .... thereby it would be best if their sentences are reduced?!?!?!?

This obviously makes a lot of sense to these judges and to those who support this decision .... to me .... it makes no sense at all and it is only going to make a very bad situation worse.
