Iraq’s new government faces formidable challenges: healing sectarian fissures, fighting terrorism and rebuild a war-torn economy.
The country will be hoping Nouri al-Maliki, who was sworn in as Prime Minister on Thursday, will do a better job than during his last five years in office.
Back in March, when Iraq held its second elections after Saddam Hussain was dethroned, more than a few commentators proclaimed that its people had voted for a break with the past. Perhaps that’s true, but the government they’ve got looks a lot like the old one.
