Congo President Re-elected In Disputed Vote, Raising Fears Of New Mayhem -- New York Times

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo — Joseph Kabila, the incumbent president, was declared the official winner Friday of Congo’s troubled election, defeating his nearest rival by 15 percentage points in an outcome that many residents in the sprawling, dilapidated capital of Kinshasa feared would incite new spasms of political violence.

The announcement, by Congo’s electoral commission, was not unexpected and was greeted by blaring car horns from supporters of Mr. Kabila in the heavily guarded downtown. Elsewhere, though, in a metropolis of nearly 10 million that is considered a stronghold of the opposition, the streets were lined with glum-looking supporters of the man who finished second, Etienne Tshisekedi. The silence was punctuated by occasional gunshots as the cruising police fired in the air to disperse the crowds.
