Japan Delays Decision On U.S. Base Relocation -- Wall Street Journal
TOKYO -- Japan's half-century alliance with the U.S. will face further strains next year, after Japanese leaders postponed a decision on a contentious plan to relocate a U.S. military base into 2010.
Following weeks of thorny internal discussions, the center-left government of Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Tuesday formally gave up trying to reach an consensus on the future of the U.S. airbase on the island of Okinawa before the end of the year. That makes it impossible for Washington and Tokyo to reach a resolution on the issue by year-end, as U.S. officials had hoped. Japanese officials say they keep talking in coming months, perhaps until May or later.
